№ 01 / Introduction

From Stay in School to Family Enterprise Development

The Mom & Daughter Enterprise Hub was born out of the Dew Empowerment Foundation’s Stay in School Programme.

Through years of supporting vulnerable girls, we realised that educational support alone could not address the underlying economic challenges affecting school retention. This insight inspired the development of a Family Enterprise Development Model that empowers mothers and daughters to build sustainable livelihoods while securing girls’ education.

When household income is unstable, a girl’s education can be at risk.

Girls from financially vulnerable households may struggle to remain in school when their families cannot consistently meet education-related expenses.

UNICEF’s 2024 Situation Analysis reports that 58% of children in Nigeria’s poorest wealth group are out of school, compared with 6% of children in the wealthiest group.

Our experience through the Stay in School Project has reinforced an important reality:

Supporting the girl alone is not enough when the household cannot afford to keep her in school.

The gap we are addressing is therefore household income instability.

We believe that strengthening the economic capacity of the mother while equipping the daughter with practical enterprise skills can create a stronger pathway for the family.

We work with the mother and daughter together.

The Mom & Daughter Enterprise Hub brings mothers and daughters together to learn practical skills, gain industry exposure, receive mentorship and access seed capital to start or strengthen small enterprises.

How the programme works

Six stages from selection to sustainable enterprise.

Each mother-and-daughter pair moves through a practical pathway that combines training, business preparation, real-world exposure, and continued support.

Selection

Twenty-five pairs begin together.

Twenty-five vulnerable mother-and-daughter pairs are carefully selected through the Foundation’s community network and Stay in School Programme.

Enterprise support

A viable idea and the means to begin.

Each participating family receives guidance to develop a viable business idea, with access to seed capital to commence their enterprise.

Practical exposure

Learning in real business environments.

Participants are attached to experienced trainers for post-training practical learning, allowing them to refine their skills through real business environments.

Mentorship

Two months of structured support.

After training, participants receive structured mentorship, coaching, and business support to help establish sustainable enterprises.
